March update from Sales Director Gavin Mochan

Gavin_picThis month I had the honour of meeting Mr. Jim McColl OBE.  For those who don’t know Jim, he is one of Scotland’s most successful businessmen.

Jim has been at the heart of the engineering and technology markets in Scotland for over 30 years and through his efforts in business, has created thousands of high quality, well paid job opportunities for his fellow Scots.

In 2014, following the demise of Ferguson Shipbuilders, Jim stepped in to save the last merchant shipyard on the Clyde from extinction.  His company, Clyde Blowers Capital, invested £8-20 million in the project which safeguarded the Clyde’s shipbuilding legacy.   Meaning there’ll be more high quality, skilled jobs being made available for generations.

Twitter_sponsor logos1jobs.com has served the people of Scotland for over 14 years now, even longer than the mighty Google has been around, and in that time we’ve strived to deliver a high quality job advertising and career management platform that is easy  to use and exclusive to the Scottish jobs marketplace.

Whilst many of our competitors have looked outward and now provide content on a global basis, we like to keep things close to home for our audience (which currently sits at close on 700,000 unique users – around a fifth of the working population of the country) and focus on the jobs marketplace north of the border.

What’s happening in the Scottish IT contractor market?

It’s been an interesting year so far.  January was quieter than I anticipated.  However, February & March have more than made up for it, and in particular I’m seeing significant growth across the board in the market for contractors.

Good contractors are not interested in taking on permanent roles and this can cause a number of issues for recruiters.  The best people have made enough money to sit and wait for the next, ideal opportunity.  This increases the pressure on recruiters because it takes scarce skills out of the market.  A recruiter can be tasked by a company with filling a permanent job, which needs to be filled temporarily in the meantime. So another recruiter is given the task of finding the contractor and the candidates are contacted by two recruitment companies for what is in effect the same job.  But where to find these candidates?

The s1jobs Recruitment Awards front-runners…

Entries for categories 5-20 may have closed, but the User Vote categories are still in full swing – they don’t close until 13th March.

If you’re unfamiliar with the s1jobs Recruitment Awards we do things a little differently. We put some of the power in the hands of our users. So for the first 4 categories, the s1jobs users get the chance to be judge and jury.

The votes have been piling in and we wanted to take this opportunity to highlight the front-runners. However it’s very tight and as voting is open until 13th March it’s certainly all to play for! Just because you’re a frontrunner now, doesn’t mean you’ll be a winner on the night.
